Sagittaria is a genus of about 30 species of aquatic plants whose members go by a variety of common names, including arrowhead, duck potato, iz-ze-kn and katniss.

Katniss Everdeen is an ordinary girl in District 12, one of the 12 districts in Panem. Her family is made up of three people: Katniss, Prim, her sweet sister who cooks and becomes a nurse, and her mother, who left them for two weeks after the tragic incident of her father's death in the mines. After her father's death, Katniss took the head job as head of the family, teaming up with Gale Hawthorne, who's father also died in the mine. Katniss and Gale trek each day to the forest, and hunt, then trade in the Hob, District 12's official black market. 

Every year, two people are chosen randomly to represent their district in the Hunger Games, a female and male tribute. The representatives must fight to kill  until there is only one person left. Each person gets their name in a glass ball, and their district's escort, Effie Trinket, picks one name out of each glass bowl: a female bowl and a male bowl. You start when your twelve and end at 18. These are the rules of the Games.

But here's the catch. The districts are poor districts,who often starve to death. So, you can get a portion of oil and grain if you add your name in more than once. Some do it 6 times. Some do it 42.

Katniss adores Prim. This is Prim's first reaping, and Katniss has forbidden her to sign up for more oil and grain. And yet, she gets picked.

But Katniss volunteers. For Prim. So now Katniss has a new battle: how will she win the Games?
